Matta’s regularly supports local arts based recovery charity Genie In The Gutter. Dalip delivers yoga and meditation wellness sessions to some of our cities most marginalised citizens on a weekly basis.

Supporting people with addiction, mental health and homelessness problems, Genie, winners of the Mayors Award for Social Innovation, helps over 150 people each year to recover, reclaim their lives and reach their full potential. For every £1 spent at Genie £27 is saved to the public purse. Despite its success, and following national funding cuts, Genie lost 90% of its funding in 2016, and whilst they have overcome this adversity, they are now aiming to raise funds with their first  musical production which will also celebrate their 10th anniversary. This will enable the charity to become more sustainable and self-sufficient, helping them to create a lasting legacy for our city for many years to come!

One Man’s Story, is a fundraising musical theatre production and tells the transatlantic tale of ‘Bongo’ Eddie Folk, a world-renowned musician and percussionist for the chart-topping band Kid Creole and the Coconuts for over 20 years, and patron of Genie In The Gutter.

One Man’s Story is a new, vibrant, innovative musical theatre production that tells the twists and turns of Bongo’s life through prose, music, rhythm and dance, as well as a special live set by the chart topping band Kid Creole and the Coconuts, in memory of their dear friend.

One Man’s Story is written by Carolyn Edwards, partner of ‘Bongo’ Eddie Folk and founder of Genie In The Gutter. The inspiration for the production was borne out of Carolyn’s grief following Eddie’s death, and her desire to celebrate ten years of the Genie charity successfully providing a lifeline to Liverpool’s most marginalised citizens.

Along with industry professionals and emerging artists, Genie’s service-users are involved in the production as actors, set designers and stagehands. Both in terms of its narrative and its production, One Man’s Story aims to demonstrate that those who are marginalised by society can still achieve their artistic potential and build a successful future for themselves.

Everyone can make a difference! Matta’s are proud to be sponsoring Genie by supporting their  ‘Sponsor a Seat’ initiative, this will enable somebody who has never had the opportunity to experience the theatre and be part of this fabulous show.

If you would like to make a difference and ‘Sponsor a Seat’ please contact Janine at janine@genieinthegutter.co.uk or comment on the post below and someone will be in touch.

We’d love to see you all there and thank you for your support.
